There is an obvious philosophical problem with radiocarbon dating. It assumes, as I understand, a specific rate of continual atomic decay. If that rate should change at any time due to any variable that we don’t know about then the dating will be wrong. We can only be sure of its rates over the period of time that we have had to observe the decay, which is barely 100 years. If there should be a change in the rate after 500 years, well, then our assumption will be wrong. Now we can extend that by comparing the method of dating with historical record, of course, and if they coincide then we can reasonably assume that the dating works back that far. But that only works for the length of time that humans have kept historical records, and beyond that again we are forced to turn to assumption and cannot really be sure that there is never any change in the rate of decay. I say this, not as a geologist, because I’m not, but simply as a man who uses his brain. If anyone can show how I’m definitively wrong, I’d be interested.

in any event, I think a religious certainty in dating methods is not wise or truly scientific.
